The NBA Finals recently crowned the New York Knicks as champions. The series finished in game 5, on a 4-1 score for the Knicks over the San Antonio Spurs. The Texans got quite close to the target, but in the end they didn’t deliver. As things stand, the upcoming season will be full of tough and challenging games for the Spurs, who are obviously looking to repeat their success and close the season with a different outcome.

A sweet season with a bitter ending
The Spurs found success in the season we have just put in the history books, but it wasn’t enough to lift the O’Brien Championship Trophy. The cup went to New York, together with the new champions. The ending to a brilliant season was quite bitter for San Antonio. The nail in the coffin, for the Spurs, was probably their unbelievable game 4 defeat. The Knicks were down 29 points, but they managed to win after an epic comeback for the ages. Psychologically, it must have been a gut punch for the Texans, who never recovered, even if their roster is built well enough to face similar opponents, on similar stages. As team builders are well aware, you can’t change the past, but you can plan for the future by strengthening your core and covering your weaknesses. What happened this season in the finals might have been a fluke, against an opponent that saw a lot of things going its way, as it sometimes happens in the NBA, but the Spurs can’t take this point for granted and must work to put together a better team next season, building around their superstar, the alien Victor Wembanyama.
Wemby’s strengths and weak points
To put it simply, Victor Wembanyama is a generational talent. These words are often abused, but his combination of size, skill, and mobility is truly unprecedented and makes him one of the most uniquely dominant players in basketball in this generation. The Frenchman is an elite rim protector who dominates in the paint. His massive wingspan and his instinctive timing allow him to block shots and alter the trajectory of the ball before the attacker reaches the rim. No matter his length, Wemby possesses the ball-handling, shooting touch, and passing vision of a traditional guard, who is typically way shorter. He can stretch the floor, shoot off the dribble, and create chances for teammates whenever they are attacking. His frame allows him to guard multiple positions without sacrificing defensive positioning and puts Wembanyama among the greatest at such a young age. As it is always the case, though, the player also presents some weaknesses. Wembanyama can be bothered by strong, physical, and stocky defenders. Pushing him out of his preferred sweet spots, or crowding him closely with another player can make it difficult for him to initiate his offense comfortably. His shot selection may be inefficient. Wemby relies too often on forced, off-the-dribble three-pointers. Additionally, a center of gravity that high can lead to an elevated turnover rate when handling the ball in a tight space. We have seen him relying too much on perimeter shooting rather than capitalizing on mismatches by backing down smaller defenders in the paint. At 22, Wembanyama can work on each of his weaknesses during this offseason and become a better version of himself. He is already a terrific player, but has some glaring weaknesses that need to be adjusted.
Can the Spurs run it back in 2027?
No one knowing something about basketball doubted that San Antonio would have been a good team, but very few expected them to be this good so soon. The first to tell you that will be the Spurs’ head coach, Mitch Johnson. As he told NBA.com: “We’ve been blood, sweat, and tears for nine months, basically. It’s over. There will be plenty of time for reflection. But yeah, on the surface, I don’t think anybody other than ourselves, and maybe not all of us, expected us to be here. So there’s a lot of good in that. There’s a lot of pain in what just happened. And pride, obviously”. San Antonio started hot and became scorching as the season went on, living their best-case scenario for the season. The Spurs were 23-7 on Boxing Day, after winning against the quite good Oklahoma City Thunder. At the end of January, they were 32-16 and then, in February, San Antonio went nuts, sweeping the month with an amazing 11-0 record. Throughout the whole season, the Spurs never lost more than two games in a row.
In the playoffs, the Texans put together their best performances, all their best stars put together a nice run, starting with Wembanyama and continuing with De’Aaron Fox and Dylan Harper, who is a rookie and can grow up to be the trusty second to the French giant. San Antonio is not a finished product as of today, but its stocks are trending way up right now. This is a solid team that is a couple of players away from becoming the best roster in the league.
