Second Spectrum

Second Spectrum is the official player tracking technology provider for the NBA since 2017-2018 season. Before Second Spectrum era, SportVu was the main video tracking provider which operated between 2013-14 and 2016-17 seasons.

Genius Sports has acquired Second Spectrum in May 2021 for $200m.

In 2013, Rajiv Maheswaran, Yu-Han Chang, and Jeff Su founded an sports-tech company that helps players, coaches, broadcasters, analysts, and fans visualize and contextualize big amount of sports data. With the video tracking technology, the cameras installed on NBA arenas can collect 3D spatial data including ball/player/referee locations, movements, and other dynamic statistical/visual feature. “Spatiotemporal pattern recognition” technique identifies and augments data extracted from the video to generate insights and visualize new types of stats such as Quantified Shot Quality (qSQ) and Quantified Shooter Impact (qSI) so the context produced can be used for storytelling.

Since 2018–19 season, Clippers fans have been able to use Second Spectrum’s CourtVision app which streams games on any device with help of AI. Courtvision app a quick presentation of Xs and Os of the offensive plays, real-time shot-making percentages as the player moves on the opponent’s half-court and other visual effects such as fire on the hoop, explosions when dunked.
