What Changed In Playoffs

Despite the small size of samples and postseason is not over, I have made a quantitative analysis of playoff teams. Download the analysis in spreadsheets in case you would like to.

Not to mention the results of the teams who were eliminated in the first round don't tell the whole story since they have played against only one opponent. First of all, let me explain what "4 factors" is.

Download the Playoffs 2008 Stats in Excel Format

Now you can download Playoffs 2008's  cumulative and game-by-game efficiency data in MS Excel files.

Have fun with it!

Big Cactus Effect, What Changed in Phoenix?

It's the same "old" story. They said he couldn't run, they said the Suns couldn't even make it to playoffs with him.

Here is briefly what changed after Shaq has come to Phoenix:

EFFICIENCY
PACEOFFENSEDEFENSE
××

He slightly (0.29 more points per 100 possessions) helps Suns' offense but the team has allowed 1.67 more points per 100 possessions. That points out worse defense since he has arrived.

SHOOTING
eFG%OPP eFG%
×

The Suns are shooting with a better effective field goal percentage while opposing teams are also shooting better to Suns' rim.

REBOUNDING
OR%DR%

This is what Shaq significantly changed. Better offensive (2.52% increase) and defensive (3.19% increase) rebounding percentage!

FREE THROWS
FTM/FGAOPP FTM/FGA
×

The Suns are getting to foul line more and also allowing opponents to take more free throws.

TURNOVERS
TO/POSSOPP TO/POSS
××

Turnovers per possession (1.7% more) are hurting! Opponent turnovers forced (-1.67%) has also decreased.

The J-Kidd Effect on Mavs' Statistical Facts

NBAstuffer.com has executed the quantitative analysis, Jake Kerr of Mavsmoneyball.com wrote the story.

Read how Jason Kidd has changed Dallas Mavericks' statistical facts.

Earlier, the  "Trades Work Out?" article has J-Kidd's individual statistical changes since he has been traded to Dallas.

Here is briefly what changed in Dallas after the trade:

EFFICIENCY
PACEOFFENSEDEFENSE
×

He runs the show with a faster pace, but less efficiently on offense. Team's defensive effort is better.

SHOOTING
eFG%OPP eFG%

Mavericks are shooting the ball with a higher effective field goal percentage and forcing the opponents to a lower effective field goal percentage.

REBOUNDING
OR%DR%
×

Offensive rebound percentage has decreased while defensive rebounding percentage has increased.

FREE THROWS
FTM/FGAOPP FTM/FGA
×

They are getting to the foul line a with a lower FTM/FGA ratio and forcing opponents to a lower FTM/FGA ratio.

TURNOVERS
TO/POSSOPP TO/POSS
××

Kidd and the Mavs turn the ball over (per possession) more with forcing the opponents to a lower turnover per possession ratio.

Let me know the players who else you would like to see a post-trade analysis here.
